The Great Exchange
2 Corinthians 5:21
"For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him." - 2 Corinthians 5:21 (NKJV)
In this single verse, the apostle Paul encapsulates the heart of the gospel—the profound truth of the great exchange that took place at the cross. It is a truth that transforms our standing before God and shapes the essence of our Christian identity.
I. Him Who Knew No Sin
The apostle Paul directs our gaze to Jesus—Him who knew no sin. Here lies the mystery of the Incarnate One, the sinless Son of God. In His earthly sojourn, Jesus remained untainted by sin, perfectly reflecting the holiness and righteousness of the Father.
II. Made Him to Be Sin for Us
The unimaginable unfolds in the next phrase—God made Him to be sin for us. The sinless One took upon Himself the weight of our sin, bearing the penalty and experiencing the punishment from the Father that sin brings. This was not a mere identification with sinners but a substitutionary act, the Lamb of God becoming the sin offering for humanity.
III. The Gravity of the Exchange
The gravity of this exchange cannot be overstated. The sinless One clothed in the shame and guilt of our transgressions. The purity of Christ juxtaposed with the ugliness of sin. It is a transaction beyond human comprehension, a divine act of mercy and love that reaches into the depths of our brokenness.
IV. That We Might Become the Righteousness of God
The purpose of this great exchange is revealed—so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. In the divine economy, our sin is exchanged for His righteousness. We stand before God not in our own merit but in the imputed righteousness of Christ. It is a status granted by grace, received through faith, and secured by the finished work of the cross.
V. The Marvel of Justification
This great exchange is at the core of justification—the legal declaration of righteousness. It is not based on our efforts or worthiness but on the completed work of Christ. The sinless Savior took our place, and in return, we receive the status of righteousness, not as a reward for our deeds but as a gift of God's grace.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, we stand in awe of the great exchange accomplished at the cross. Thank You for making Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. May this truth permeate our hearts and shape our identity as Your beloved children. Help us to live in the reality of this divine exchange, walking in the freedom and righteousness secured for us by the sacrificial love of Jesus. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen.
May this devotional deepen your appreciation for the profound truth of the great exchange and inspire gratitude for the imputed righteousness found in Christ. May you walk in the freedom and identity secured by the sacrificial love of Jesus.
