Repentance and Faith Toward Our Lord Jesus Christ

Acts 20:21

"testifying to Jews, and also to Greeks, repentance toward God and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ." - Acts 20:21 (NKJV)

In this concise yet comprehensive statement, the apostle Paul summarizes the essence of his ministry—calling both Jews and Greeks to repentance and faith in Jesus Christ. This dual emphasis on repentance toward God and faith toward Christ underscores the foundational truths of the Christian gospel.

I. The Call to Repentance

Repentance is the turning away from sin, particularly the sin of unbelief, and turning toward God—a change of mind, heart, and direction. It involves acknowledging our sinfulness, confessing our need for forgiveness, and surrendering our lives to God's authority. Repentance is not merely feeling sorry for our sins but taking concrete steps to turn away from unbelief,  and pursue righteousness.

II. The Nature of Faith

Faith, on the other hand, is the confident trust and reliance on Jesus Christ for salvation. It involves believing in His atoning sacrifice on the cross, His resurrection from the dead, and His lordship over all creation. Faith is not merely intellectual assent but a wholehearted commitment to follow Christ and obey His teachings.

III. The Two-Sided Coin of Conversion

Repentance and faith are inseparable components of genuine conversion. Repentance prepares the heart for faith by acknowledging the need for a Savior and recognizing the gravity of sin. Faith, in turn, responds to God's offer of salvation by trusting in the finished work of Christ on the cross. Together, repentance and faith mark the beginning of a new life in Christ—a life characterized by obedience, transformation, and eternal hope.

IV. A Universal Call

Paul's message of repentance and faith was not limited to a specific audience but was proclaimed to both Jews and Greeks—to religious insiders and outsiders alike. It is a message that transcends cultural, ethnic, and religious barriers, extending to all who are willing to heed the call to turn from sin of unbelief and embrace Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, we confess our need for Your forgiveness and mercy. Grant us the grace to repent of our sins, especially of not beleiving in You, and turn to You with all our hearts. Strengthen our faith in Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord, that we may walk in obedience to Your will and experience the fullness of life that He offers. May our lives bear witness to the transforming power of Your grace. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen.

May this devotional encourage you to heed the call to repentance and faith in Jesus Christ. May you experience the joy and freedom that come from turning to Him with all your heart, trusting in His grace and mercy for salvation.
