The Freedom of Christ
Galatians 5:1
“Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage.” - Galatians 5:1 (NKJV)
In this verse, Paul delivers a powerful exhortation about the freedom we have in Christ and the danger of returning to legalistic bondage.
The Freedom We Possess
Paul urges believers to stand fast "in the liberty" that comes through faith in Christ. It's a liberty that liberates us from the burden of trying to earn our own righteousness. Through His death and resurrection, Jesus has freed us from the penalty and power of sin, as well as from the impossible burden of trying to earn righteousness through the law.
This freedom is a gift of grace, not something we could achieve on our own. It is the result of God’s love and mercy extended to us through Christ. Yet, it’s more than just freedom from something—it’s freedom for something. We are set free to live in a relationship with God, to worship Him, and to serve others in love. The liberty we have in Christ is not a license for sin but an invitation to walk in the fullness of life that God intended for us.
The Danger of Returning to Bondage
Paul warns against the peril of being "entangled again with a yoke of bondage." He is addressing the temptation to revert to a works-based approach to righteousness. For the Galatians, this involved the pressure to observe Old Testament laws, such as circumcision, as a means of earning God’s favor. But Paul makes it clear that adding anything to the work of Christ undermines the gospel itself.
While we may not face the same cultural pressures as the Galatians, we too can fall into similar traps. Perhaps it’s the belief that our worthiness before God depends on our performance, or the tendency to measure our spiritual value by outward achievements. These are modern-day yokes of bondage that rob us of the joy and peace found in trusting Christ alone.
Standing Firm in Liberty
Paul exhorts us to “stand fast” in the liberty Christ has given us. This requires vigilance and intentionality. The enemy seeks to draw us back into bondage, whether through legalism, sin, or worldly distractions. Standing firm means holding tightly to the gospel, reminding ourselves daily of the grace that has set us free.
It also means rejecting anything that diminishes Christ’s work on our behalf. We must anchor our identity in Him, not in our performance or the approval of others. As we abide in His truth, we grow in the freedom to live as God’s redeemed children, fully secure in His love.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, we thank You for the liberty we have in Christ, a freedom that is rooted in Your grace and not our own efforts. Help us to stand firm in this freedom and guard against any form of legalistic bondage. May we walk in obedience, not out of obligation, but out of gratitude for the immense love You have shown us. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen.
May this devotional and prayer be a reminder of the profound freedom we have in Christ and an encouragement to walk in grace-fueled obedience.
