The Everlasting God Who Does Not Grow Weary

Isaiah 40:28

"Have you not known? Have you not heard? The everlasting God, the Lord, The Creator of the ends of the earth, Neither faints nor is weary. His understanding is unsearchable." - Isaiah 40:28 (NKJV)

Isaiah 40:28 invites us to pause and marvel at the greatness of God, a God who is beyond human comprehension yet accessible through His revelation. This verse serves as a reminder of who God is in His nature and character: He is everlasting, unchanging, and infinitely wise. Isaiah, writing to a people weary and discouraged, anchors them in this truth—a truth as vital for us today as it was then.

The Everlasting God

Isaiah’s first words in this verse are almost rhetorical: “Have you not known? Have you not heard?” The prophet is reminding his audience of truths they have been taught but may have forgotten in their struggles and weariness. And what is this truth? That God is everlasting. Before the world began, God was there, and long after our own lives on this earth come to an end, God will still be. His presence is not fleeting or dependent on time. He stands above and beyond time, and in Him, there is no beginning or end.

The permanence of God brings a deep assurance to our souls. Human strength falters, relationships change, economies fluctuate, but God remains steadfast. In every circumstance, He is our anchor. The fact that God is everlasting means that His promises are too. When He promises to be with us, to strengthen us, and to uphold us, we can take Him at His word.

He Does Not Grow Weary

Isaiah goes on to declare that this everlasting God “neither faints nor is weary.” What a remarkable truth! While we often find ourselves exhausted by the demands of life, our God never tires. His power is infinite; it does not run out or need to be renewed. Unlike us, God does not need rest, nor does He waver in His commitment to us.

When we come to Him weary and burdened, we find One who is not only willing but fully able to carry our burdens. God does not grow weary in upholding His creation, and He certainly does not grow weary in loving and caring for His people. We can rest in Him, knowing that His strength is boundless and His commitment to us unwavering.

His Understanding is Unsearchable

Isaiah also reminds us that God’s “understanding is unsearchable.” We may not understand the complexities of life, why things happen the way they do, or why we go through certain trials. But we can trust that God’s wisdom is perfect. He sees the end from the beginning, and His plans are good. In our finite understanding, we might question or struggle, but God’s understanding is far above ours.

When we feel overwhelmed or discouraged, Isaiah calls us to remember who God is—the Creator of all, the everlasting, all-powerful, and all-knowing One. He does not grow weary, and His understanding is beyond our comprehension. This truth doesn’t remove our burdens, but it does give us the strength to carry them. We can place our trust in Him, for He is more than able to sustain us.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, we thank You for Your unchanging nature, for being the everlasting God who does not grow weary. Help us to rest in Your strength and wisdom, even when we don’t understand. Draw us near and remind us of Your steadfast love. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen.

May this devotional remind you to trust in God’s wisdom, resting in the truth that He is eternal and does not grow weary.
