The High and Lofty One
Isaiah 57:15
"For thus says the High and Lofty One Who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy: "I dwell in the high and holy place, With him who has a contrite and humble spirit, To revive the spirit of the humble, And to revive the heart of the contrite ones." - Isaiah 57:15 (NKJV)
In this verse, Isaiah presents a profound picture of God's character and His intimate relationship with those who are humble and contrite in heart.
I. The High and Lofty One
The description of God as the "High and Lofty One who inhabits eternity" serves as a powerful reminder of His transcendent nature. He exists beyond the constraints of time and space, and His majesty and holiness are far above human comprehension. Yet, despite His exalted position, He is intimately involved with His creation.
II. Dwelling with the Contrite and Humble
This verse offers a stunning paradox: the God who dwells in the highest heavens also dwells with those who possess a contrite and humble spirit. He is not a distant deity, but a God who desires closeness with His people.
The "contrite and humble spirit" represents a heart that recognizes its own brokenness and dependence on God. It is a heart that is tender, receptive, and open to God's leading. In such a heart, God finds a dwelling place.
III. Reviving the Humble and Contrite
God's promise to revive the spirit of the humble and the heart of the contrite is a source of immense hope and comfort. It speaks to His redemptive and restorative power. He does not turn away from those who come to Him in humility and contrition; He breathes new life into them.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, we come before You with contrite and humble hearts, acknowledging our need for You. Thank You for the promise of Your presence with us, despite Your exalted nature. We ask for Your reviving touch, to breathe new life into our spirits and hearts. May we walk in humility before You, knowing that You are the High and Lofty One who graciously dwells with us. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen.
May this devotional and prayer be a reminder of God's willingness to dwell with the contrite and humble, and His promise to revive and restore those who turn to Him.
