Do Not Be Dismayed

Jeremiah 1:17-19

"Therefore prepare yourself and arise, and speak to them all that I command you. Do not be dismayed before their faces, lest I dismay you before them. For behold, I have made you this day a fortified city and an iron pillar, and bronze walls against the whole land—against the kings of Judah, against its princes, against its priests, and against the people of the land. They will fight against you, but they shall not prevail against you. For I am with you," says the Lord, "to deliver you." - Jeremiah 1:17-19 (NKJV)

In these verses, we find a powerful commissioning to the prophet Jeremiah, accompanied by both a warning and an assurance. These words hold timeless lessons for all who are called to speak God's truth in a world often resistant to it.

I. Prepare Yourself and Arise

The call to Jeremiah is clear: "Prepare yourself and arise." This directive is not just for prophets; it's a call to every believer who is entrusted with the task of sharing God's Word. It involves a spiritual readiness, a firm resolve to stand on God's truth, and a willingness to proclaim it without compromise.

II. Do Not Be Dismayed

God, in His infinite wisdom, forewarns Jeremiah of the opposition he will face. He cautions against being dismayed by the reactions of the people. This warning carries a broader application for all who speak God's truth. In the face of resistance, it's easy to be discouraged. But God reminds us not to be swayed by popular opinion or intimidated by opposition.

III. Fortified City, Iron Pillar, Bronze Walls

The imagery God uses to describe Jeremiah's role is striking. He likens him to a fortified city, an iron pillar, and bronze walls. These symbols convey strength, stability, and immovability. They signify the unyielding nature of God's truth in the face of worldly challenges.

Likewise, as bearers of God's Word, we are called to be pillars of truth in a shifting world. We are to stand firm, unwavering in our commitment to proclaim the unchanging truths of Scripture.

IV. They Will Fight Against You, But They Shall Not Prevail

God's warning of opposition is coupled with a resounding promise: "They will fight against you, but they shall not prevail against you." This assurance is rooted in the unshakable sovereignty of God. He declares that no force, no opposition, and no scheme of man can ultimately thwart His purposes.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, as we embark on the journey of proclaiming Your truth, we humbly ask for Your strength and courage. Help us to prepare ourselves, to stand firm, and to speak boldly. When opposition arises, may we not be dismayed, but find our confidence in You. Grant us the assurance that, in Your sovereignty, Your purposes will prevail. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen.

May this devotional be an encouragement to stand firm in proclaiming God's truth, knowing that He is with us and His purposes will ultimately prevail.
