The Power of the Gospel

Romans 1:16-17

"For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, 'The just shall live by faith.'" - Romans 1:16-17 (NKJV)

The Apostle Paul’s words to the believers in Rome capture the essence of his ministry and heart for the gospel. Paul, who once vehemently opposed Christianity, now boldly declares he is “not ashamed of the gospel.” Why? Because he understands it as the “power of God to salvation.” It’s not just a message or an ideology—it’s God’s power at work, bringing transformation and life to everyone who believes. This truth is as foundational today as it was then.

The Power of God in the Gospel

When Paul speaks of the gospel as the power of God, he’s pointing to its supernatural nature. Unlike any other message or philosophy, the gospel contains God’s very power—His active force to rescue, redeem, and transform lives. This power is not theoretical; it’s experiential. We see it in the lives of those who have been transformed, delivered from sin, and given new life in Christ.

In a world that often promotes self-sufficiency, the gospel declares that we cannot save ourselves. Our righteousness, our good works, and our efforts fall short. The gospel calls us to admit our inability and to trust in God’s power alone. It’s a humbling realization, yet it’s incredibly freeing, for in the gospel, we find the strength of God working on our behalf.

Salvation for Everyone Who Believes

Paul emphasizes that the gospel is for “everyone who believes.” This universal call of the gospel extends beyond ethnic and cultural barriers, reaching both Jews and Gentiles alike. God’s offer of salvation is open to everyone—no one is excluded. This inclusivity underscores God’s heart for humanity; He desires that none should perish but that all would come to repentance (2 Peter 3:9).

This inclusivity also challenges us. Are we sharing the gospel as freely as God offers it? Do we, like Paul, hold an unashamed confidence in the gospel? The truth is, this good news is not ours to keep; it’s ours to share. We are called to be heralds of God’s saving work, bringing His hope and life to all who will listen.

The Righteousness of God Revealed

In verse 17, Paul tells us that the gospel reveals the righteousness of God, and this revelation is “from faith to faith.” This phrase reminds us that our walk with God is marked by ongoing faith. The life of faith is not a single event but a continual journey of trusting God. And what are we to trust? That “the just shall live by faith.” We are not justified by our works or merit, but by placing our faith in Christ and His finished work on the cross.

This call to faith is both simple and profound. It beckons us to live each day trusting God’s promises, leaning not on our own understanding, but acknowledging Him in all our ways (Proverbs 3:5-6). The righteousness we receive by faith shapes how we live, love, and serve. As those justified by faith, we now live out that faith, reflecting Christ in a world that desperately needs Him.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank You for the power of the gospel. Grant us boldness to share it freely and faith to live by it daily. May Your righteousness shine through our lives, drawing others to Your saving grace. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen.

May this devotional inspire you to embrace the transforming power of the gospel, live boldly in the righteousness of faith, and share the good news of salvation with confidence and joy.
